This is Probably The Best Book Shop in York!

The Minster Gate Bookshop

I recently went away for a quick break to York and found lots of interesting places to see and things to do. After visiting the York Minster I decided to wander around to see what other treasures I could find. It was raining and I was contemplating calling it a day, however, I decided to brave the weather, and I was glad I did. I walked across to a little alley just opposite the magnificent York Minster where I found a little gem.

As I walked in I felt like a kid in a candy store. The shop had a magical feeling, with books stacked on shelves and in every corner. The shop was established in 1970 and is situated in a Georgian townhouse over five floors. Apparently, Minster Gates formed the entrance to the medieval precinct of York Minster. The street has been associated with books and bookselling since 1580 and was formerly known as Bookland Lane. They stock an extensive range of antiquarian and second-hand books. You can also find Children’s and Illustrated Books, and a range of old maps and prints.

As I went from room to room, I was amazed at the number of books they had in the shop, apart from those on the shelves there were books on tables and books stacked neatly on the floor just in front of the shelves and books lining the stairs on each level. The books were reasonably priced, so I picked up a few and began reading immediately after leaving the shop. This was a book lover’s dream and would definitely recommend paying them a visit on your next trip to York.
